How street handles are built
¶A handle is a working name, not a nickname, and it is compounded rather than chosen from a list. The first element is a material or a condition, chrome, static, rust, neon, null, and the second is a job or a body part, runner, jockey, hand, tooth, wire. Chromeghost and Rustjockey are legible at a glance because both halves do work: one says what you are made of, the other says what you do with it. Nobody needs the explanation.
The vocabulary is deliberately cheap and hard. Industrial materials, failing electronics, weather in a city that has too much concrete: solder, sleet, tar, glass, ash, grid, fuse. It reads right because it names things that are lying around rather than things that are precious, and because a handle earned on a job tends to record the job. Trace and Splice began as verbs. Halo and Wick began as descriptions of how somebody looked on a bad camera.
Length is status. A long handle marks somebody new or somebody trying, and the compression that follows is the real promotion, so Chromewire becomes Chrome and then just Chrome to three people who matter. Above the handle sits a crew or a corp, and which one you carry says who is liable for you. Crews take place names, the Lowside Collective, the Ninth Family. Corps take the bland vocabulary of the annual report, which is the joke.

Questions
How do you make a good cyberpunk name?
Compound two concrete words and refuse to be poetic. Take a material or a fault condition for the first half and a role, tool or body part for the second, then say it out loud as if you were shouting it across a loud room. If it survives that, it works. Handles that describe what somebody does always beat handles that describe how cool they are.
Do cyberpunk characters use real names?
They have them, and mostly they are a liability. A legal name ties you to records, debts and a corp employment file, so a handle exists partly to keep those separate. Useful writing texture: the moment a character's real name is used by somebody who should not know it is a threat, and it usually lands harder than any gun in the scene.
What are good cyberpunk crew and corp names?
Crews take their name from territory or from a shared job, so a place name plus a collective noun does the work: Lowside Collective, Ashgate Crew, Ninth Family. Corps go the other way and use the flattest possible corporate vocabulary, holdings, dynamics, systems, securities, because blandness reads as power. Put the two registers side by side and the setting explains itself.
Should a handle be one word or two?
One, joined. Two-word handles read as stage names, and street names compress under use rather than expanding. Start with a compound of two elements written solid, then let characters shorten it in dialogue. Nobody says the full form of a name they use daily, so the short form is what your reader will actually remember by the end of a chapter.
