What you are using

The work

Every fragment on this site was placed by hand. Not scraped, not generated — 113 generators, each one a pair of hand-built lists that follow the sound rules of its tradition, and every piece carries its own meaning, so the name you get can be read as well as used. Behind them sits a lexicon of 12,460 senses indexed by what they mean, and the whole of it is written out again in ten languages.

It is free, and the part that matters stays free: every generator, every meaning, the whole lexicon and the name builder, with no account and no limit on how many names you take. If tools for people who name things for a living are built later — a workspace for a campaign or a novel, bulk export, that kind of thing — those may cost money. Nothing you can already do here will move behind a payment. There are no adverts; if that ever changes it will be said on this page, and it will never happen inside a generator.

If it has been useful

Tip jar

If a name from here ended up in your campaign, your novel, your band or your server, and you feel like saying thanks — the tip jar is open. Even a small amount is a real contribution at this size, and every one of them gets noticed.

Leave a tip

It goes straight back into the site: more sets, more traditions in the lexicon, and native vocabulary for the traditions that still build their names out of English.

Found something wrong?

Corrections

Every name here comes with a claim about what it means. Those claims are researched, and some of them are wrong — a word that reads differently to a native speaker than it does in a dictionary, a gloss that is technically defensible and plainly odd in use.

If you read one of these languages and something here is off, tell us: info@visible-impact.ch. Name the page and the word. It is the one kind of help nobody else can give us.

Suggestions are welcome the same way. A tradition we have missed, a sense that deserves its own page, a set that reads flat.

Sharing

The site is new and almost nobody has heard of it. A link in a forum answer, a wiki, a post about the game you are running, or a message to the person at your table who names everything — that is how a site like this is found at all.
