How vampire names are built

Etymology

Vampire naming follows the old Central and Eastern European pattern, because that is where the surviving lines were made. A personal name is dithematic: two Slavic elements welded together, the first carrying the quality and the second the standing. Vlad is rule, mir is world, slav is glory, drag is precious, bor is battle. Vladimir, Dragoslav and Borislav are built exactly this way, and a vampire keeps the structure long after the language around it has changed.

The second half of the name is where region shows. Romanian lines take the descendant suffixes escu and eanu, so a founder called Vlad produces the house Vladescu. Slavic lines take vich, ov, ev and ski, all meaning son of or belonging to. Germanic lines abandon patronymics entirely and use place: stein a stone, berg a mountain, thal a valley, burg a castle, feld a field. The suffix tells you which border the family sat on.

Because a vampire outlives the paperwork, most keep the given name and rotate the house name every few generations, presenting as their own descendant. The oldest carry two: the birth name, spoken by nobody living, and the current name on the deeds. Titles matter as much as names. Grav is a count, zar a sovereign, meister a master, and a vampire who volunteers a title is establishing precedence before the conversation starts.

Questions

FAQ

What are good vampire last names?

Use a root plus a real regional ending. Romanian lines give Vladescu, Corbineanu and Dragomescu; Slavic lines give Cernovich, Krovanov and Ostrovski; Germanic lines give Nachtstein, Eisenberg and Falkenthal. Pick the ending first, since it decides the whole flavour, then choose a root that means something about the founder rather than something that just sounds gothic.

Why do vampire names sound Romanian or Slavic?

The literary vampire was assembled in the nineteenth century from Balkan and Carpathian folklore, so the naming conventions came with it. Those traditions build names from two meaning-bearing elements and mark family with a descendant suffix, which is why the results feel authentic rather than invented. The elements used here follow real Slavic, Romanian and German vocabulary.

Are there female vampire names?

Yes, and they follow the same logic with feminine endings. Roots such as Mara, Draga, Vesna and Morana take second elements like slava, mira, nocta and krova, giving Draganocta or Vesnamira. Germanic feminine forms lean on linde, rosen, krone and grafin, which is where the countess register comes from in most fiction.

How do I name an old vampire versus a young one?

Age shows in the ending, not the root. An older vampire carries an archaic Slavic form ending in slav, mir or vich; a younger one carries a Romanian escu or a Germanic place name from whichever century they last needed papers. Giving a character two names and letting the older one slip out is the cheapest way to signal real age.
