How band names are built

Etymology

Most band names come from three or four repeating shapes. The oldest is the definite-article plural, an adjective or noun followed by a plural: the Hollow Lanterns, the Restless Magpies. It arrived with skiffle and beat groups, it reads as a gang rather than a solo act, and it still signals guitars. Drop the article and the same pair sounds colder and more modern, which is why so many acts formed after the nineties did exactly that.

The second shape is the incongruous pair: a word from one register bolted to a word from another. Arctic plus a species of monkey, plastic plus a cathedral. The join is meant to be slightly wrong. It works because the friction gives the name a picture and stops it sliding into genre wallpaper, and it is memorable for the same reason a mixed metaphor is. Two concrete words beat one abstract one almost every time.

Genre does most of the remaining work. Metal leans on hard consonants, weather and Latinate abstractions; folk reaches for landscape, trades and seasons; electronic acts favour machinery, geometry and single invented words. Occupational plurals, the Cartographers, the Undertakers, carry a wry tone that suits indie and post-punk. Whatever shape you pick, say it aloud, then imagine it announced from a stage, printed small on a poster, and typed into a search bar.

Questions

FAQ

How do I come up with a band name?

Collect twenty words you like from books, maps, tools and species lists, then pair them across categories rather than within them. Read each pair out loud. Keep the ones that make a picture and drop the ones that only make a mood. Then check it against streaming platforms and social handles before you get attached to it.

Should our band name start with The?

It depends on the sound you want to signal. The definite-article plural reads as a group of people playing instruments together, which suits rock, garage, indie and soul. Dropping the article makes the same words read as a project or a brand, which suits electronic, ambient and heavier styles. You can also register both and let people use whichever they prefer.

How do I check whether a band name is taken?

Search the exact name on the major streaming services, on social platforms, and in your national trademark register. Also search it with your genre attached, since two bands sharing a name in different scenes is common and only becomes a problem when one of you starts touring. If a dormant act holds the name, a small variation is usually safer than a fight.

What makes a band name memorable?

Concreteness and rhythm. Names built from things you can picture stick better than names built from feelings, and a name with an obvious stress pattern is easier to chant and easier to repeat. Short helps, but it is not essential. What matters most is that someone can hear it once, spell it correctly, and find you.
