How ships are named
¶Fighting navies have named ships after virtues for four centuries. Endeavour, Resolute, Valiant, Constancy, Triumph: abstract nouns and adjectives that describe the crew rather than the hull. The habit began when warships were instruments of state and their names were propaganda, and it survives because a virtue name ages well. Note that these names take the definite article in speech, the Dauntless, the Endeavour, even when the article is absent from the hull.
The second great source is myth and predation. Neptune, Triton, Kraken and Siren claim the sea itself; Lion, Panther, Falcon, Osprey and Serpent claim speed or teeth. Smaller vessels take smaller predators, which is why sloops and cutters are so often named after seabirds while ships of the line take gods and big cats. Merchant owners drew instead on family names, home ports and cargo, a quieter tradition with its own logic.
Modern fleets add hull prefixes and a place-name layer. HMS, USS, RV and MV mark nationality or role, and classes are named systematically: submarines after rivers or cities, carriers after people, survey vessels after explorers.
