How barbarian names are built
¶A barbarian name is a sentence with the pronoun knocked out. The first element is a verb in the plain past — brak broke, torv took, fenn felled, ulf howled, stagg stood against — and the second is the thing it was done to: dorr a gate, bern a bear, gald the winter, skoll a skull. Torvskoll means took the skull. The name is not a description of a person, it is the record of one afternoon, and everybody who says it is repeating the story.
Because the name is a deed, nobody has one at birth. Children are called by a place, a parent or a nickname until they do something the tribe agrees to keep, and the deed-name is announced rather than given. That has consequences worth playing: a barbarian in their twenties may still be carrying a child-name, an unpopular deed can leave someone stuck with a name that is a joke, and a person can be renamed after a second deed if the first has been eclipsed.
The kill-name comes after, and it is spoken in the common tongue so outsiders understand it: Bearbreaker, Frostcrosser, Oathender, Kinkiller. It names the largest thing you put down. Tribes take the accuracy of these seriously — claiming a kill-name you did not earn is the sort of thing that gets settled outdoors — and the ugly ones are kept as carefully as the glorious ones, because the point of the second name is that it is true.

Questions
What are good barbarian names?
Ones that record something. Pick a verb and a thing it happened to: Brakdorr, Fennbern, Rukkstakk, Storrvann. The name should be readable as a short sentence, because that is what it is. Names built only for sound land as generic fantasy; names built as deeds give the table an immediate question, which is what happened.
How do I name a barbarian character in D&D?
Decide the deed first, then build the name around it. Work out what your character did before play started that their people would repeat, then pick the verb and the object from that story. You end up with a name, a piece of backstory, and a reason other characters ask about it, all from the same decision.
What are good barbarian last names or epithets?
Use a kill-name: Bearbreaker, Serpentflayer, Wintercrosser, Skullhewer, Trollwrestler. It names the largest thing the character has faced rather than a bloodline, and it is spoken in the common tongue so that people outside the tribe understand the claim. Choose it slightly beyond what the character can comfortably back up and you have a whole personality.
Should barbarian names sound like Viking names?
Not necessarily. The naming logic here is deed-first, which several cold-country cultures share but none owns. What makes a name read as barbarian is that it means an action rather than a quality: a Norse-style name tends to be two nouns, while a deed-name is a verb plus an object, and that difference is what the ear picks up.
Can I use these names in D&D or my own fiction?
Yes. The tribal verbs and nouns here are invented for this generator and the kill-names are ordinary English compounds, so nothing is drawn from a published setting or an existing character. Use the names for player characters, NPCs, novels or commercial modules without attribution or restriction.
