How god names are built

Etymology

A god's name is a claim, not a label, and it is built in two halves. The first element names what the god is — vor devourer, il light, hesh silence, thur thunder, gar keeper, eth first. The second element names what the god holds: noth night, gath gate, thos abyss, ran reign, sar stars, thal deep. Read together they give the domain in one breath. Vornoth is the devourer of the night, and that is the whole theology in eight letters.

The sound has to be heavy enough to say aloud in a room with an echo. Divine names favour closed syllables, the fricatives th and s, and hard stops at the end — Thalgath, Azrath, Kornoth — because a name ending on an open vowel sounds like a person rather than a power. Feminine forms open that ending into a and e, so Aelidara and Selnara read as older and more merciful. Neutral forms take an abstract noun first and name forces rather than figures.

The epithet is what worshippers actually use. A name is too dangerous or too formal for daily use, so the god is addressed by title — the Unmaker, the Dawnbringer, the Deepwarden, the Silencekeeper — and the true name appears only in oaths, curses and founding texts. Build the epithet from the god's domain plus what the god does with it, then decide which of the two names your characters are permitted to say out loud.

Questions

FAQ

What are some good god names for a fantasy pantheon?

Look for a name where both halves say something. Vornoth devourer of the night, Iltharos light of the abyss, Selnara moon of the fire. Then give the god an epithet that a worshipper would actually use, such as the Dawnbringer or the Deepwarden, and keep the full name for oaths and inscriptions.

How do I name a whole pantheon so it sounds related?

Share the machinery, not the syllables. Give every god in the pantheon the same two-part structure, then split the second elements by domain: sky gods take heights, dawn and vastness, underworld gods take abyss, night and root. Siblings can share a first element. Rivals should share nothing, which is how a reader tells the factions apart.

Are these real gods from mythology?

No. Every element here is invented for this generator, and the results are deliberately not the names of deities from any living religion or historical pantheon. If a combination happens to resemble a real name, it is coincidence rather than derivation, and you are free to rename any result before it goes into your setting.

What is a good name for a god of death or the underworld?

Take a first element that describes an action rather than a mood — devourer, keeper, silence, exile, ending — and pair it with a domain that names a place rather than a feeling: abyss, night, root, gate, deep. Zethnoth, Vorthos and Ulnath all work. Then add an epithet with a verb in it, such as the Sunderer or the Gatekeeper.

Can I use these names for a D&D deity or a novel?

Yes. The elements are original to this generator rather than lifted from a published setting or a real pantheon, so the names carry no attribution requirement. The meanings are supplied so you can write a clergy, a holy text and a set of taboos around what the two halves of the name actually claim.
