How wizard names are built
¶A wizard's name is a title before it is a name. The first element carries the material or the phenomenon the mage is associated with — cin cinder, syg sigil, stel fixed star, thaum wonder, glim glimmer, um shade. The second element carries the standing: ric rule, dric rule, ian adept, ir seeker, them law, thas oath, vos voice. Thaumric is not decoration. It reads as one who governs wonders, and colleagues in the order hear both halves.
Sound is what separates a mage's name from a peasant's. The register favours long vowels, sibilants and the fricatives th, ph and s, and it tolerates the letters x, y and z that ordinary names avoid, which is why Azvael, Zephyr and Crypthas sound learned rather than rustic. Feminine forms extend the first element with a vowel — Cindra, Umbra, Pyra — and take endings built on l, n and soft th. Neutral forms end on hard consonants and read as offices rather than people.
The epithet is the part that is earned. A mage takes a working name at initiation, then acquires a second name from the order or from the people who survived what they did: Starwarden, Emberkindler, Greyward, Quillscribe, Ashmantle. Older traditions used a bare colour instead, so the same person is Alzar Greyward in the archives and the Grey at the door. Use the epithet to say what the character is known for, not what they can do.

Questions
What is a good wizard name?
One that sounds like a title someone else conferred. Take an arcane first element with a concrete image behind it — cinder, sigil, star, ash, tide — and close it with an ending that names a rank or a habit of mind, such as ric, ian, them or vos. Two or three syllables, then an epithet.
What are good wizard last names?
Wizards rarely carry family surnames. They carry epithets: Starwarden, Emberkindler, Ashmantle, Quillscribe, Greyward. Build one from an element the mage is associated with plus an office noun such as warden, binder, scribe, keeper or kindler. If your setting has mage families, keep the epithet and let the family name stay unspoken.
Why are wizards called things like the Grey?
A bare colour is the oldest form of the epithet, used when an order ranks its members by degree or by discipline rather than by achievement. It is short enough to shout and vague enough to be respectful. If your wizard belongs to a formal order, give them both: a full compound epithet on paper and a colour in conversation.
How is a wizard name different from a sorcerer or warlock name?
A wizard's name reads as scholarship, so it leans on words for writing, measurement and law: glyph, sigil, scroll, compass, law, oath. A sorcerer's name leans on the body and the bloodline, and a warlock's on the bargain. Keeping to the scholarly vocabulary is what stops the name reading as a fantasy race.
Can I use these wizard names in my campaign or book?
Yes. Every element here is invented for this generator rather than lifted from a published setting, so the names carry no attribution requirement. The meanings are supplied so you can justify the name in-world, or build a whole order whose members all share one first element and differ only in their epithets.
