How half-elf names are built

Etymology

A half-elf name is a seam. The first element comes out of the elven parent's tongue and behaves the way elvish does — long vowels, liquid consonants, a meaning about light, temperament or season: aen quiet, illa flowing, nive snowlit, saela blessed. The second element is common speech, short and flat, the kind of word a human village actually uses: ward a watchman, stan a standing stone, mark a border. Aenward is a quiet watchman, and the two halves never quite dissolve into each other.

That mismatch is the point, and elves and humans hear it differently. To an elf the name sounds truncated, as though somebody stopped speaking halfway; to a human it sounds ornamented, three syllables where two would have done. Most half-elves learn young which half to lean on. In a border town Illaford becomes Ford; at an elven table the same person is Illa, and the human ending is politely ignored. The full name is the only place both parents are present at once.

Family names go the human way almost without exception, because elven houses rarely enrol a half-blood and human parishes always do. They are place names — a tree or a bird plus a landscape feature: Ashcombe, Wrenhollow, Osiermere. That is why so many half-elves carry a lyrical given name in front of a thoroughly ordinary surname. If you want the character's history in one line, choose a first element from the parent who left and a surname from the parent who stayed.

Questions

FAQ

What is a good half-elf name?

One that shows the join. Take an elven first element with an open vowel and attach a blunt human ending: Selumund, Ithewin, Kalliahild. Say it aloud and listen for the point where the register changes — if you can hear it, the name is doing its job. Names that are wholly elven or wholly human read as an elf or a human with a footnote.

Do half-elves use elven or human last names?

Usually human ones, because human communities keep parish rolls and elven houses keep bloodlines. A half-elf raised among humans carries a place surname like Rookmere or Bramholt. One raised among elves may carry no surname at all and be introduced by the given name plus the mother's house, which is a status the house can withdraw at any time.

Are half-elf names different from elf names?

Yes, structurally. A full elven name is two elven elements and resolves cleanly into one image. A half-elf name is one elven element plus one common-tongue element, so the halves stay legible as separate words. That is also why half-elf names are shorter than elven ones — the human half rarely runs past a single syllable.

Can a half-elf change their name later?

Frequently, and it is the most useful thing you can know about the character. Half-elves who move between the two societies tend to shed one half of the name for the duration. Dropping the elven element reads as assimilation; dropping the human one reads as a claim on the elven side of the family, and both are noticed by everyone in the room.

Can I use these names in D&D or my own fiction?

Yes. The elven elements here are invented for this generator rather than lifted from any published setting, and the human elements are ordinary English and Old English words, so nothing produced is anyone's property. Use the names for player characters, NPCs, novels or published modules without attribution.
