How wood elf names are built

Etymology

Wood elven is the plain-spoken branch of the elven language, and it shows in the sounds. The vowels are short and single, the words end on consonants, and none of the long court runs of l and th survive. A name is two elements: a living thing first — berk birch, harn hare, korr crow, rask rain — and a place or a habit second: lann a glade, ledd a deer path, merr still water, nesk a burrow. Harnledd is a hare's path, and it is meant literally.

That is the real difference from high elven, which pairs an abstract quality with a station and produces names about what someone is like. Wood elven pairs two concrete things and produces a name about where someone was, and the two registers are mutually intelligible but immediately distinguishable. A court elf hears a wood elf name as a place-marker with a person attached. Wood elves take the same view of it, which is why the naming is done in the season a child is first carried outside.

Beyond the birth-name a wood elf usually carries a band-name rather than a house name. These are transparent compounds of a quality and a growing thing — Longbriar, Underbracken, Quietmoss, Greyrowan — and they belong to the group that hunts and moves together rather than to a bloodline. People join and leave bands, and the name goes with the band, so an older character may have carried three or four of them. That history is worth writing down before the first session.

Questions

FAQ

What are good wood elf names?

Ones you could point at. Take a living thing and a piece of ground and put them together: Berklann, Loddmar, Korrnesk, Fennshaw. Two or three syllables, ending on a consonant, with nothing that needs a long vowel to say. If the name could plausibly be a place on a map of the forest, it is working the way wood elven names work.

How are wood elf names different from high elf names?

High elven names are abstract quality plus rank and run long on liquid consonants. Wood elven names are concrete thing plus concrete place and stop on hard endings. Compare a court name like Aeliriel with a forest name like Harnledd: the first describes a person, the second describes a spot in the trees where a person happened. Both are elvish; only one is decorative.

Do wood elves have surnames?

They have band-names, which behave differently. A band-name is a quality plus a growing thing — Longbriar, Stillfern, Thickrowan — and it marks who a wood elf ranges with rather than who they are descended from. It changes when the band changes. Characters who have left a band and not joined another go by their given name alone, and among wood elves that is read as a story worth asking about.

Are wood elf names the same as druid names?

They overlap in vocabulary and differ in purpose. A druid name is a place invoked because the place matters, and it can be taken by anyone of any race who keeps the practice. A wood elf name is simply how that culture names children, using the plants and animals nearest to hand. If your character is both, the two naming logics agree and the name gets no stranger for it.

Can I use these names in D&D or my own fiction?

Yes. The sylvan elements here are invented for this generator and glossed with their own meanings rather than taken from any published elvish, so nothing produced belongs to anyone else. Use the names for player characters, NPCs, novels, or published modules, with no attribution required.
