How knight names are built

Etymology

The knightly names of Norman England are Frankish compounds worn down by French pronunciation. Every one is two Germanic elements: Robert is fame plus bright, Gerard is spear plus hardy, Baldwin is bold plus friend, Reginald is power plus rule, Guillaume is will plus helmet. The stock of elements is short and martial — spear, army, battle, wolf, raven, bold, hardy, ruler, guard — and a family recycled the same halves across generations, so a hall full of cousins shares roots rather than whole names.

French sanded the endings down without removing them. Old Germanic wald becomes ault and aud, so Theudbald turns into Thibault and Reginwald into Renaud. Hari becomes ier, giving Gautier and Olivier. Helm becomes aume, giving Guillaume. The same name therefore has an English form and a Norman form, and which one you pick tells the reader whose side of the Channel your knight comes from. Feminine names take the same first elements and close on gard, hild, trude, burg and lind.

The second name is a place, not a family. A knight is styled of somewhere — the manor he holds, the village he came from, or the castle his grandfather took — and the Norman particle de carries that of. Beaufort is the fair stronghold, Montclair the bright hill, Rochemont the rocky hill, Vertbois the green wood. Write it as Sir Aymer de Beaufort in the Norman style, or Sir Aymer of Beaufort when your court speaks English.

Questions

FAQ

What are good knight names?

Pick a Norman given name built from two martial elements, then attach a holding. Gerard de Montclair, Aymer de Rochemont, Baldwin of Vertbois. The given name says what the family valued, the place name says what they own, and together they tell a reader the character's rank before he has spoken a line.

What is the de in a knight's name?

It is French for of, and it introduces the place a knight holds or comes from rather than a family surname. Sir Roger de Beaufort is Roger of Beaufort. In English documents the same man is written Sir Roger of Beaufort. Neither form is a hereditary surname at first; it hardens into one only after a few generations in the same manor.

What were female knight names in the Middle Ages?

Noblewomen used the same Frankish system with feminine second elements: gard enclosure, hild battle, trude strength, burg fortress, lind soft. That gives Ermengarde, Mathilde, Rohese, Adelinde and Constance. A woman of knightly rank was styled the same way as her brothers, with de and the family holding, so Alis de Rochemont is exactly parallel to Aymer de Rochemont.

Do these names work for a paladin or a dark knight?

Yes, and the epithet does the work. Keep the Norman given name and swap the holding for something that reads badly: Malcourt is the ill manor, Noirchastel the black castle, Sanglande the bloody heath. A knight who has lost his lands is styled by a nickname instead, which is where a virtue epithet or a colour becomes useful.

Are these real medieval names?

The elements are genuine Frankish and Old French name elements with their standard meanings, recombined the way medieval families actually recombined them. Many results are attested names such as Gerard, Baldwin and Renaud. The place names follow real Norman formation patterns but are not lifted from any particular village or noble house.
