How modern Nordic names are built

Etymology

This is the living Scandinavian stock, not the Viking Age one. The viking generator on this site builds Old Norse names with raider bynames, the Erik the Red layer. Here the names are the ones on a Danish, Norwegian or Swedish class list now: some genuinely Norse, such as Bjørn bear, Ulf wolf, Ragnar counsel-warrior and the Thor compounds Torstein and Torbjørn, and many imported with the Church, such as Jens, Nils, Peder, Anders and Kristian.

Two given names are normal, and the second is used as often as the first. Jan Erik, Per Olav, Nils Petter, Anne Marie and Karin Elisabeth all work as single units, and a Norwegian will introduce himself with both. Compound Norse names still show their halves: Sigrid is victory plus fair, Ragnhild counsel plus battle, Vigdis war plus lady, Dagny day plus new. The -hild and -dis endings mark a woman, -mund and -stein a man.

The -sen and -sson surnames were live patronymics until the nineteenth century, when the law froze them. Andersen no longer means anybody's son; it means an ancestor around 1850 had a father called Anders. Iceland alone kept the working system, with -son and -dottir recalculated every generation. Sweden filled the gap with invented nature names, Bergström and Lindberg, and Norway with farm names, Haugen the hill and Vik the bay.

Questions

FAQ

What is the difference between Nordic and Viking names?

Time and layer. Viking Age names are Old Norse and come with a byname, a descriptive tag such as the Red or Forkbeard, that was never inherited. Modern Nordic names keep some of that stock but add a thousand years of Christian imports and a frozen -sen surname. Bjørn and Ragnar survive; Thorgils and Hrafnkell mostly do not.

What does -sen mean in Scandinavian surnames?

Son of. Andersen is Anders's son, Larsen is Lars's son. Denmark and Norway spell it -sen, Sweden -sson. Until the 1800s it changed each generation, so a man's surname was his father's given name plus the ending. Legislation fixed the names in place, which is why a handful of them now cover a huge share of the population.

Why do Swedish surnames sound like landscapes?

Because most of them were made up on purpose. When patronymics were frozen, half of Sweden ended up called Andersson or Johansson, so families adopted ornamental names built from two nature words: berg mountain, ström stream, lund grove, lind linden, kvist twig, ek oak. Bergström is mountain-stream, Lindqvist linden-twig. Neither describes a real place.

Do Icelandic names work the same way?

No. Iceland never froze the patronymic, so Jón's daughter is Jónsdóttir and his son is Jónsson, and neither shares a surname with the other or with him. Icelanders are listed alphabetically by given name in the phone book, and family names are rare enough to be regulated by law.

What do Thor names mean?

Tor, Thor or Tur at the front of a name is the thunder god, and the name says he protects something: Torstein is Thor's stone, Torbjørn Thor's bear, Torgeir Thor's spear, Tordis Thor's lady. They are the most durable Norse names in modern use, and they run through Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Faroes alike.
