How Hawaiian names are built
¶An inoa is made of ordinary Hawaiian words, and the language reads them in order: the thing first, the description after. Lei, a garland, plus lani, heavenly, gives Leilani. Kai, the sea, plus nani, lovely, gives Kainani. Every syllable is a consonant and a vowel or a vowel alone, and every word ends in a vowel, which is why the elements here join without any adjustment at all. The article ka, or ke before k, e, a and o, fuses at the front: Kealoha is the love, Kekoa the warrior.
Names were not divided into male and female. The same inoa served a son or a daughter, and this generator lists one set for that reason. A name could arrive in several ways: an inoa po came in a dream from an ancestral guardian, an inoa hoailona from a sign or omen, an inoa ulaleo from a voice heard in the night. An inoa kuamuamu was deliberately ugly, given to a sickly child so that whatever was taking children would pass this one by.
Family names are recent. Hawaiians had no inherited surname until the Act to Regulate Names of 1860 required a child to take the father's given name as a family name, which is why so many Hawaiian surnames are simply somebody's inoa. Note also that Hawaiian writes the okina, a glottal stop, and the kahako, a macron for a long vowel, and both are letters that change meaning. They are left off here, as they are on most maps and in most English text.

Are Hawaiian names male or female?
Traditionally neither. An inoa is a phrase of ordinary words and it was given to a child of either sex, so names now read as girls' names in English, such as Leilani or Kalani, were used for boys as well. Modern usage in Hawaii has drifted towards English conventions, but the language itself puts no gender on a name.
What does lani mean in Hawaiian names?
Lani means sky or heaven, and by extension royal or exalted, because chiefs were spoken of in the language of the heavens. As the second element it works as an adjective: Leilani is heavenly garland, Kailani heavenly sea, Nohealani handsome one of the heavens. It is the single most common element in Hawaiian names.
Do Hawaiians have last names?
They do now. Before 1860 there was no inherited family name at all; a person carried one inoa, sometimes several over a lifetime. The Act to Regulate Names made a child take the father's given name as a surname, so a Hawaiian family name is usually an ancestor's personal name frozen in place a few generations back.
What is an inoa po?
A night name. It came to a family in a dream or vision, usually from an aumakua, an ancestral guardian spirit, and it had to be used. Hawaiian tradition treated a name as carrying mana of its own and as capable of affecting the child's health, so refusing or mangling an inoa po was a serious matter, not a matter of taste.
How do you pronounce Hawaiian names?
Every letter is sounded and every syllable ends in a vowel. A is ah, e is eh, i is ee, o is oh, u is oo, and w is often pronounced as v between vowels. Kailani is Kai-LA-ni, four short beats. The okina marks a glottal stop, the catch in the middle of the English uh-oh.
