How spaceships are named
¶Space fleets in fiction inherit their paperwork from wet navies, because that is the only working model anybody has. A hull gets a name, a class and a registry number, and the class is named after its lead ship: build the first one and every sister for thirty years carries your name on her paperwork. Classes are also themed, so survey hulls take instrument words, couriers take speed words, and heavy freighters take dull, solid, deliberately unglamorous ones.
The naming vocabulary splits into two layers. Registry words are technical and neutral, manifest, ephemeris, parallax, azimuth, quadrant, the language of the log rather than the recruiting poster. Class words name what the hull physically is, freighter, clipper, cutter, lander, tender, tug. Pairing a modifier with either layer gives a name that sounds filed rather than invented: Sidereal Manifest is a survey ship, Ninth Cutter is a picket, Outbound Tender services something bigger.
The third habit is newer and comes from science fiction rather than the sea. Ships get names that are jokes, understatements or half-quotations, and the joke is usually the crew's attitude to the voyage: Reluctant Consequence, Modest Surplus, Unlikely Corollary. It works because it sits against the bureaucratic layer. A fleet where every hull is a virtue reads as propaganda; a fleet where one hull is called Absent Apology reads as inhabited by people.

How do you name a spaceship?
Pick which layer the name belongs to before you pick words. A military hull takes a virtue or a class theme; a working hull takes a registry or cargo word; a privately owned hull takes whatever the owner finds funny. Two words is the sweet spot, because that is what fits on a hull number plate and what a controller can say once over a bad channel.
What is a ship class and how is it named?
A class is a group of hulls built to the same design, and it takes the name of the first one launched. So a Zenith-class freighter means the design that started with a ship called Zenith. Fleets keep classes themed, which is why you can often tell a ship's job from its name alone once you know which theme belongs to which yard.
What are good funny spaceship names?
Understatement beats punchlines. A name like Sufficient Margin or Reasonable Objection is funny because it is written in the register of a shipping form, and the joke is that somebody filed it. Avoid anything that reads as a brand or a slogan, keep it to two words, and make sure a bored flight controller could pronounce it without asking twice.
Do spaceships have registry numbers?
In most settings yes, and it is worth deciding what yours encodes. Real registries carry a yard code, a hull sequence and sometimes a class letter, which means the number tells you where a ship was built and how many came before it. Give your fleet a consistent format and use it in dialogue only when a character would actually read it aloud.
