How angel names are built

Etymology

An angel name is a sentence in two pieces. The first piece is an attribute — light, mercy, judgement, silence, the flame, the seal. The second piece is the theophoric ending that assigns the attribute to God: el, and its expanded forms ael, iel, riel and thiel, all meaning of God. Lumiel is not a name that happens to end in a familiar syllable. It is light of God, and the ending is doing the grammatical work of the genitive.

That construction explains why angels have no personal names in any useful sense. The name states an office. An angel called Heshathiel, silence of God, is the silence of God, and if the office changes the name changes with it, which is why the tradition is full of beings recorded under two or three names in different sources. It also explains the near-uniformity of the endings: an angel not named of God would not be an angel at all.

Beyond the el family sit the older host-endings — roth of hosts, thim of the choirs, thron of the throne, ruah of the breath. These belong to the ranks rather than to individuals, and a name carrying one reads as a title for a whole order: Gadlaroth, greatness of hosts. Attached epithets work the same way and stay transparent in English: Thronewarden, Sealkeeper, Flamebearer. They record duty, not personality, which is the point.

Questions

FAQ

What do angel names ending in -el mean?

El means God, and as a name ending it works as a genitive: the attribute in front of it belongs to God. Lumiel reads as light of God, Rahvael as greatness of God. The longer forms iel, ael, riel and thiel are the same ending with a linking syllable that smooths the join, so they carry exactly the same sense.

Are there female angel names?

The tradition does not gender angels, but naming practice has always produced softer forms for the feminine, built on the same logic with the ending ela or iela instead of el. Zoharela is radiance of God exactly as Zohrael is. Choose the ending for how you want the name to sound; the meaning is unaffected either way.

What are the names of the seven archangels?

The lists disagree, which is the useful part. Different manuscripts and traditions name different beings, and the same angel appears under several names because the name records an office rather than an identity. That is why a generator can produce authentic-sounding angel names indefinitely: the naming system is open, and any attribute of God can take a theophoric ending.

Can I use these angel names for a character?

Yes. The elements here are an invented inventory built in the Hebraic mould rather than a list copied from any scripture, grimoire or published setting, so the results are yours to use in fiction, campaigns or games. The glosses are shown so you can say in-world what office a character's name assigns them.

How do I make an angel name sound solemn rather than sweet?

Choose a hard attribute. Names built on mercy, dawn and song read gentle; names built on judgement, silence, weighing, the seal and the vigil read like something that has authority over you. Then keep the name short. Three syllables and a clean el ending sounds like a rank; five syllables starts to sound decorative.
