How frontier names were made

Etymology

Frontier naming after the Civil War was ordinary American naming worn down by use. A hand was christened Henry, Augustus or Abraham and answered to Hank, Gus or Abe for the rest of his life, because a trail crew shouting across a bedded herd wants one syllable, not four. The short form travelled on payroll ledgers, brand books and headboards, so it is the form the records actually preserve. Women's names went the same way: Henrietta became Etta, Sarah became Sadie.

Alongside the given name ran the trail name, and in an outfit it usually won. Nobody chose his own. It came from what the crew noticed first, and it stuck: dust, red hair, a left-handed rope, a short leg, the state a man had ridden up from. Dusty, Red, Lefty, Shorty, Tex. Hands worked a season beside a man and never learned his family name, which is one reason so many frontier graves carry a nickname and nothing else.

The family names came from four migrations. Southern Anglo settlers carried English occupational and place names west; Ulster Scots pushed down the valleys with Caldwell, Ferguson and Doyle; German farmers settled the Texas hill country with Bauer, Weber and Schmitt; and the vaqueros of Mexico and south Texas held the brush country long before the trail drives, which is why the surnames, the gear and the trade itself are Spanish. Cowboy translates vaquero. Roughly a quarter of trail hands were Black or Mexican.

Questions

FAQ

What are some good cowboy names for a man?

The convincing ones are short given names with an ordinary family name behind them: Hank Rawlins, Gus Ledbetter, Clem Caldwell, Wes Dempsey. Period registers are full of Hank, Gus, Abe, Jed, Clem, Wes, Zeke and Ike, because the baptismal name was long and the working name was not. Resist the urge to make the surname dramatic as well. One plain half carries the other, and a name where both halves shout reads as costume rather than as a man who worked cattle for wages.

What are some good cowgirl names for a woman?

Etta, Sadie, Cora, Nell, Belle, Hattie and Mattie are the register, and they take the same surnames the men do: Etta Caldwell, Cora Herrera, Sadie Hollis. Women on the frontier were named by the same fashion that named their brothers, so the pet form displaced the baptismal name in exactly the same way, and a family name was inherited rather than earned. Flower and gemstone names such as Daisy, Myrtle, Violet and Opal came in late in the century and are genuinely period by the eighteen-eighties.

How did cowboys get their nicknames?

Other people gave them, from the first thing anyone noticed. A trail name recorded a visible trait, a habit, a piece of gear or a place: Dusty from the drag position behind the herd, Red and Cotton from hair, Shorty and Highpockets from height, Lefty from the roping hand, Tex, Dakota and Abilene from where a man came up. Because it was assigned rather than chosen it was often unflattering, and because it was useful it replaced the real name inside the outfit.

Are these real frontier names?

Yes, in structure and in stock. The given names are the ones that fill census returns, muster rolls and trail-outfit payrolls between eighteen sixty-five and nineteen hundred, and the family names are the Anglo, Ulster Scots, German and Spanish stock that actually settled the cattle country. The surnames of the famous gunfighters and lawmen are deliberately absent, because a borrowed one reads as costume and drags a real person's biography into your character.

How do I name a character for a western story or a Wild West campaign?

Give the character two names and decide which one other people use. Write the given name and family name on the sheet, then work out the trail name the crew would have landed on and use that in dialogue: Dusty Rivera signs the payroll as Dusty Rivera and gets called Dusty. The gap between the two is free characterisation, because a man who insists on his full name in a bunkhouse is telling you something, and so is one who has forgotten it.
