How Spanish names are built

Etymology

A Spanish name usually runs to four parts: two given names and two surnames. The given names are commonly paired, which is why José Manuel, Juan Carlos and Ana Isabel sound like single units to a Spanish ear. The two surnames are not a first and middle: the first is the father's first surname, the second is the mother's first surname, and both pass on. A woman keeps her own pair for life; marriage changes nothing.

The commonest surnames are patronymics ending in -ez, an old Ibero-Romance genitive meaning son of. Pérez is the son of Pedro, González the son of Gonzalo, Rodríguez the son of Rodrigo, López the son of Lope. Fossilised medieval given names survive only inside them: nobody is called Munio or Ordoño now, but Muñoz and Ordóñez are everywhere. The ending does not agree with the bearer, so a daughter of the house is also Martínez.

The other surname layer is descriptive or geographic. Blanco, Moreno, Delgado and Calvo began as nicknames for the fair, the dark, the thin and the bald. Rivera, Vega, Molina, Iglesias and Castillo say where a family lived: by the riverbank, on the meadow, at the mill, by the church, under the castle. Female given names lean heavily on Marian titles, so Carmen, Pilar, Dolores, Rocío and Mercedes are all one Virgin under different local names.

Questions

FAQ

Why do Spanish people have two last names?

Because Spain records both parents. The first surname comes from the father, the second from the mother, and a child of Pérez Molina and García Blanco is Pérez García. Since 1999 parents may register them in either order. The system means a Spanish surname pair identifies a person far more precisely than a single family name does.

What does -ez mean in Spanish surnames?

It is a patronymic ending meaning son of, inherited from an old genitive that Spanish shares with Portuguese -es. Sánchez is the son of Sancho, Álvarez the son of Álvaro, Ramírez the son of Ramiro. Most of the base names are medieval and have dropped out of use, so the surname is now the only place you meet them.

What are the most common Spanish surnames?

García, Rodríguez, González, Fernández, López, Martínez, Sánchez and Pérez lead every register in Spain and most of Latin America. All but García are transparent -ez patronymics. García itself is the odd one out: it is probably pre-Roman and possibly Basque, and its meaning is genuinely disputed, so this generator does not gloss it.

Why are so many Spanish women called María?

María is the base of a whole family of names formed from Marian titles: María del Carmen, María del Pilar, María de los Dolores. In daily use the title does the work, so a María del Rocío is simply Rocío. We list those titles rather than María itself, because the Hebrew source of Miryam has no agreed meaning.

Are Spanish and Latin American names the same?

The structure is, and the two-surname system runs from Mexico to Argentina. The stock of given names differs: Latin America keeps colonial-era saints' names and Marian titles that have faded in Spain, and adds indigenous and imported names on top. The elements in this generator are Castilian, so they read as Spanish anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world.
